A FEW HELPFUL ANSWERS

Begin with
a little clarity.

Getting to know your matcha whisk.

What is a chasen?

A chasen is a bamboo whisk used to mix matcha powder with water. Its fine tines move through the tea to disperse the powder and incorporate air.

Do beginners need a bamboo matcha whisk?

You can prepare matcha with other tools. A bamboo chasen is a useful starting point if you want to learn the traditional whisking technique in a bowl. You do not need a full tea set to begin.

How do I use a matcha whisk?

Sift matcha into a bowl, then add warm water. Move the whisk briskly back and forth with your wrist. Keep a light touch and avoid pressing the tines into the bowl.

Why should I wet my chasen before whisking?

Briefly wetting the tines with warm water helps the bamboo become flexible before use. Avoid leaving the whisk submerged or soaking the handle.

How do I clean and store a bamboo whisk?

Rinse promptly with warm water without soap. Do not put it in a dishwasher or leave it soaking. Gently reshape the tines and let it air-dry completely on a whisk stand before storing in a ventilated place.

What is a Shin-style chasen?

Shin describes the shape of the tines. The ICHINEN Shin Chasen has nearly straight tips with very little curl, with 60–72 outer tines and an inner bundle cut from the same bamboo culm.
